Gold Star Dive
The L. A. County Sheriffs - Avalon Station's - Gold Star Dive on Saturday, July 13th, was a great success and the SCDCIE members were out in force in support of the S.T.A.R. (Success Through Awareness & Resistance) program and the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber.
The STAR program is a very successful program that assists in the education of school-age children on the dangers of substance abuse education of children On Santa Catalina Island.
SCUBA divers and skin divers searched for the Gold Stars in depths ranging between ten and fifty feet with approximately sixty feet of visibility. The Gold Stars were made of plaster and were numbered. It was estimated that close to 300 persons participated in the search for the Gold Stars. The Gold Stars were placed among the rock formations in the Casino Dive Park. Participants had an have an hour and a half to search for the Gold Stars. Divers who found a Gold Star returned the numbered Star to the check-in table for a prize and a solid chocolate Star. The numbered Gold Stars not found were raffled off along with other diver and non-diver prizes.
